The town of Erie, Colorado is in eastern Boulder County and southwest Weld County. Erie is about 30 minutes north of Denver and 20 minutes east of the city of Boulder. Erie was founded in 1871 by Reverend Richard Van Valkenburg, who decided to name the town after Erie, Pennsylvania where he spent many years preaching. In 1874, Erie, CO was incorporated. Today, Erie residents enjoy the small-town atmosphere, and they take advantage of the over 300 days per year of sunshine to do outdoor activities. Black Rock Elementary has a Great Schools rating of 10, Erie Elementary has a rating of 7, and Aspen Ridge Preparatory School is not rated because it is a charter elementary school. Erie Middle School has a Great Schools rating of 9, and Erie High School has a rating of 6. Great Schools uses a 10-point rating system based on standardized test results within the state in which 8-10 is an above average rating, 4-7 is an average rating, and 1-3 is a below average rating.
